Cylinders used in aqueduct maintenance

KENNARDS Lift and Shift has supplied hydraulic equipment to assist in the refurbishment of a major Sydney Water aqueduct.

The supplier provided Porta Power cylinders and hand pumps to asset maintenance company Lothway-TBS.

The equipment was used to conduct maintenance on the aqueduct, which spans the Parramatta River at the suburb of Camellia.

The pipeline, along with a footbridge, was constructed in 1936. Sydney water shut off the supply for over a month to allow the work to be carried out.

The cylinders were used to elevate the pipe to remove rust and replace steel saddles.

The project supervisor, Roman Percic says it was originally intended to lift the entire pipe with over 20 cylinders. However, this plan led to complications with the welding.

Percic says they instead divided the pipe into sections and lifted each with eight cylinders. The crews used manifolds to run several cylinders from a single pump.

He says the process involved lifting the pipe, removing the saddle, cleaning the rust, welding on a new plate, inserting a new saddle and finally returning the pipe into position.
