Hydraulic sheet-piling used in desalination plant construction

HYDRAULIC equipment is being used in the construction of the Silver Beach Desalination Plant at Kurnell to avoid the vibrations which are angering local residents.

Sydney Water had been drilling steel sheet-piles into the ground with constant vibratory force. Residents in the area complained the levels of vibration had exceeded the allowed limit.

The sheet-piles will instead be placed into the ground with the push-piling method. A push-piling rig has been mounted at the site. The rig uses a combination of hydraulic equipment and the piles’ own weight to drive it into the ground.

The company says the equipment is typically used for installing permanent concrete piles. This will be the first time it will be used with steel sheet-piles.
