THIRTY hydraulic roof supports have arrived by ship in Mackay for a new longwall in the Carborough Downs coal mine, 20km east of Moranbah.

Inbye Mining Services Queensland has been contracted to construct the longwall 180m underground.

The company says these units are the first of 149 to arrive from Poland. Each weighs 42t and has the capacity to hold up 1248t of earth.

When all the machines are installed, they will have the combined capacity to support up to 184,462t.

Constructing the 300m longwall is expected to last around 18 months. It is forecast to provide 4500t of coal a day.
